Be the Change You Want to See in our Industry
July 19, 2010 – 3:27 pm
I am so tired of hearing agents bemoan the market, the economic times, the unemployment, the foreclosures, the short sales, the next wave of devastation… The other 50% either need a toe tag or a defibrillator – “CLEAR!”
This is my call to ‘SNAP OUT OF IT!” Seriously folks, if I roll up to another house with a “Reduced” or “Make Offer” sign on a dry rotted sign I’m going to scream! If I meet another agent that is prostituting themselves to take crap from another bank or jump through fiery hoops from a short sale lender I’m also going to scream! We don’t have to work like this and lower our standards in the industry. Instead of prostituting we should be proselytizing positivity about the market, the economy, the world and life in general – that it’s good and hopeful and improving. We live in the sweet spot of the universe – start acting like it.
It’s no wonder the public has this fear, bottom-feeding, kick the tires, stalled out woe is me attitude – even though it has never been a better time to buy. The planets are aligned as they have never been in decades. Interest rates are at a 45 year low, while housing prices have corrected themselves and coastal areas in Southern California are affordable and attainable once again when they were completly out of reach for most of us only four years ago…
We as agents and Realtors are the barometer for the public. We are in the trenches and on the front lines (unless you are one of the ones that remains in a fetal position sucking your thumb crying for days past). Ayn Rand, author of Atlas Shrugged wrote, “We don’t see things as they are, we see things as WE are”.
If you are feeding into the 90% club negative nay say mongering that has run rampant in our world, do us all a favor and quit the business. Let’s start focusing on the positive attributes of our respective cities and point out what we take for granted; but not those that saved for a year live to enjoy for a week from Arizona, or Yuma or Las Vegas or Palm Desert or some other inclement area of our nation.
We have a large body of water that beacons the masses, and they have a chance to change up their lifestyles and be a part of the beach community in this market. Lively up yourselves people and bring some enthusiasm and zeal to your personalities and your open houses. Put out the extra signs and bake the cookies and pour the lemonade. Open early and stay late. Learn about the community and share the enthusiasm with the people that are afraid to put their feet in the water.
Life is good in California – and things could be alot worse. Start being the change you want to see in our industry and let’s work to bring that enthusiasm back to the buying public. These kind of opportunities only come around in a lifetime – and that time is now. It’s not a buyers market unless you buy something.
Get it together people and put value back in the real estate that we market and sell. We can make a difference and a difference in the lives of our clients. Start today!

Superb write-up. Now if we could only get the agents to listen.
You did a great job and agree with you point of view.
